🚨 ALL animal bites require same-day medical review
Rabies is fatal once symptoms start. Early vaccination is the only protection.
🐾 First Aid — Immediate Steps (ALL Animal Bites)
1️⃣Wash immediately: Soap and running water for at least 15 minutes. Single most important step.
2️⃣Apply Betadine (povidone iodine) or 70% alcohol
3️⃣Do NOT close/suture the wound immediately
4️⃣Seek medical care SAME DAY for wound assessment + rabies vaccination
5️⃣Check tetanus immunisation — booster may be needed
⚠️ Do NOT apply: chilli, turmeric, soil, or home remedies — these cause infection.
🐾 Animal-Specific Guidance
🐕 Dog Bite
🔴Stray dog: HIGH rabies risk — ARV same day
🟡Pet dog (vaccinated): wound care + medical review
📋ARV schedule: Day 0, 3, 7, 14, 28 — do NOT miss any dose
💉Deep bite / face/neck/head: Also needs RIG (Rabies Immunoglobulin)
🐈 Cat Bite
High infection risk (Pasteurella). Same-day review + ARV if stray cat.
🐒 Monkey Bite
Rabies + Herpes B virus risk. Hospital immediately. ARV required.
🐭 Rat Bite
Rat Bite Fever risk. Doctor same day. Antibiotics may be needed.
🐍 Snake Bite
🚨HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY — even if no symptoms yet
Keep child calm and still — movement spreads venom
Immobilise the bitten limb
Do NOT cut, suck venom, tourniquet, or ice
💉Ask the hospital about Anti-Snake Venom (ASV). ASV is available in government hospitals. Do not delay transfer to a facility where ASV is available if envenomation is suspected.
🦂 Scorpion Sting
Hospital immediately in children — cardiovascular collapse risk. Cold pack (not ice). No tourniquet.
💉 Rabies Vaccination (ARV)
ARV is FREE at all Government hospitals in India
When started promptly and completed fully, rabies PEP is highly effective. Do not miss any dose.
WHO regimen: Day 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28
RIG for severe bites / bites on head/face/neck

💡Handwashing reduces diarrhoea by 50% and pneumonia by 25%
💉 Vaccination
Follow IAP 2024 immunisation schedule
Missed dose — catch-up vaccination is always possible
Mild fever/soreness after vaccination — normal
Vaccines do NOT cause autism — dangerous myth.
🤱 Breastfeeding
Start within 1 hour of birth — colostrum is the baby's first vaccine
Exclusive breastfeeding for first 6 months
Continue up to 2 years with complementary foods
🌡️ Fever Myths
❌ MYTH: High fever causes brain damage
FACT: Normal infection fevers do NOT cause brain damage. The underlying illness can.
❌ MYTH: Every fever needs antibiotic
FACT: 90% of childhood fevers are viral. Antibiotics only work for bacterial infections.
❌ MYTH: Always bring down fever with medicine
FACT: Treat child's discomfort — not the number. Paracetamol if uncomfortable or ≥38.5°C.
💊 Antibiotic Misuse
Most childhood fevers and coughs are viral — antibiotics do not help
Overuse creates resistant bacteria — harder to treat future infections
Never use leftover antibiotics or share between children
Always complete the full prescribed course
